Consists of four volumes of letter books, a ship log, and a scrapbook kept by Lawrence Kearny from 1814-1844. The letter books contain letters to important officials regarding political matters Kearny became involved with, including letters to the U.S. Consular agent in Canton concerning claims by U.S. citizens for losses incurred by riotous Chinese in 1843. While Kearny stopped in Hawaii on his return home, he wrote the U.S. Commercial Agent in Oahu regarding King Kamehameha III and his surrender of power to the government of the United States. There are also letters he wrote rreferring to his reports on sites for lighthouses and a request for musicians for his ship. The ship log kept by Kearny while he was commander of the U.S.S. Warren dates from 1827 to 1828. The log has daily entries in which he notes the weather, the amount of water, pork and beef expended, and the latitude and longitude. Beginning on February 23, 1827, the wind directions and course of the ship are noted by the hour; notations are made by the different officers of the watch. Periodically there are entries indicating the number of sick sailors and officers. The scrapbook contains weddings, anecdotal press clippings, and notes on rules for each naval officer to follow.
